Freshwater ecosystems

IH Cantabria has been investigating the interrelationships and dependencies between terrestrial ecosystems and inland aquatic ecosystems.

The Freshwater Ecosystems group is currently working on different research projects in several  geographic areas of the Iberian Peninsula and South America on issues related to hydrology, geomorphology, biodiversity and ecosystem functioning. The team works on different time scales using multiple data collection systems ranging from the scale of vegetation polygon or river section to  river basins or large network scales. One of the research group's main interests is the determination of the ecosystem's resilience mechanisms (biophysical) that keep them functioning, as well as their biodiversity (services), and how these are modified when faced with natural or anthropogenic disturbances.
