IH Cantabria has extensive experience in developing projects related to port engineering, overseeing the design of new facilities, and  reviewing and optimizing existing ports as well as carrying out work connected with the analysis of the environmental impact on the coast by the presence of a port or its construction, the design of operational systems to help in the construction and operation phase, and design of structures unconventional port security. The tasks carried out range from: pre-geometry design and optimal selection of construction site, plant design alternatives, design and review of sections of the port security structures; study and survey of fleets, port management, and reviewing anchoring zones to manuevering areas, all of which have required a thorough technical advance in the state of the art to achieve an optimum design and an efficient exploitation of the port.

The fulfillment of these objectives by IH Cantabria has been achieved thanks to the extensive experience in research and the use of advanced laboratory, numerical, and statistical techniques as well as the comprehensive understanding of the environmental variables that interact with port facilities.

More specifically, IH Cantabria has achieved significant progress in the development of advanced wave propagation and agitation models based on mild slope equations, and the modified Boussinesq equation, which solve the complex processes experienced by the waves as they interact with port structures. These advances, coupled with the valuable information obtained from instrumental experimental facilities (CCOB), field campaigns and monitoring, and advanced research  in the field of marine climate and climate change, ensure that the port structures are designed to reach operatiional and functional limits.establishing structural recommendations maritime and port works nationally and internationally.
