Inés Mazarrasa Elósegui


    Dr. in Marine Ecology by the University of the Balearic Islands (October 2016).

    Inés graduated in Biology in the Cumplutense University of Madrid with a specialization in Environmental Sciences, in 2010. She then joined the Global Change Research Group of the Mediterranean Institute for Advanced Studies (IMEDEA-CSIC) in Mallorca where she participated in different projects related to the effects of Global Change in marine ecosystems. There she also conducted her PhD thesis funded by a fellowship from the Government of The Balearic Is. Her thesis focused on the assessment of the role seagrass meadows play as carbon sinks and their potential for climate change mitigation. Thanks to a research fellowship “Beca Iberoamericana Santander Investigación” from the “Santander Universidades” foundation, Inés conducted a four months stay in the Centro de Investigación en Ciencias del Mar y Limnología (CIMAR) at the University of Costa Rica (October 2016) to contribute to the first assessment of the carbon sink capacity of seagrass meadows of the Caribbean Coast of Costa Rica.

    She is particularly interested in coastal ecosystems ecology, the role they play in climate change mitigation, both as carbon sinks and as coastal protection, and their vulnerability to human pressures: eutrophication, erosion and pollution.
