WE HAVE PARTICIPATED IN THE LAST OPENFOAM® RELEASE (V1806) BY INCORPORATING A NEW IRREGULAR WAVE GENERATION CODE AND A FLOW-VEGETATION INTERACTION MODEL

RandomIHCantabria has participated in the last OpenFOAM® release (v1806) by OpenCFD (https://www.openfoam.com/releases/openfoam-v1806/) incorporating a new irregular wave model based on the frequency-direction spectrum to the suite of available wave models. This last release has been added to the generation boundary conditions set in OpenFOAM®, already implemented in previous versions by IHCantabria and Open CFD. In addition, those boundary conditions can be linked with an active wave absorption module developed for shallow water waves also by IHCantabria, with avoid the use of relaxation zones and consequently the reduction of the computational cost. These new developments have been recently presented in the 13th OpenFOAM Workshop 2018, held in Shanghai, China, on June 24-29: Wave and Current Interaction with Moored Floating Bodies using Overset Method, Lara, J.L., Di Paolo, B., Barajas, G., Losada, I.J.. Additionally, a new model to simulate flow interaction with vegetation fields. This new model has been fully validated in two SCI journal papers (Maza, M., Lara, J.L., Losada, I.J. (2015) Tsunami wave interaction with mangrove forests: A 3-D numerical approach; Maza, M., Lara, J.L., Losada, I.J. (2016) Solitary wave attenuation by vegetation patches) and presented in several international conferences.

IHCantabria has also presented an IHFOAM-GUI, freely distributed on the IHFOAM website (http://ihfoam.ihcantabria.com/model/gui/), containing IHFOAM developments during the last years and already included in release v1806. Additionally, other physics not included in this release are incorporated in the GUI, such as porous media flow (fully validated, published in four papers). IHFOAM-GUI, designed within the Coastal Hydrodynamics and Infrastructures Group comprised by ten members, was developed with the aim of decreasing the learning curve in the use of OpenFOAM® and making more popular the use of the model in coastal and ocean engineering.

IHCantabria reached an agreement with ESI Group to include the IHFOAM developments in OpenFOAM® releases, which are presented every six months, becoming one of the OpenFOAM partners (https://www.openfoam.com/community/partners.php).IHCantabria developments has passed along a thorough validation with existing or tailored designed laboratory tests.
