Javier Lopez Lara, Head of Hydrodynamics and Coastal Infrastructures Group at IHCantabria, recognized as outstanding reviewer in ASCE journal

Javier Lopez Lara, associate professor in University of Cantabria and Head of Hydrodynamics and Coastal Infrastructures Group at IHCantabria, has been named a 2017 Outstanding Reviewer award from the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE).

Javier was selected by the editor of the Journal of Waterway, Port, Coastal and Ocean Engineering and recognized for his outstanding work as a reviewer for the journal. He has been a reviewer for the journal for over eight years. He reviewed papers investigating coastal structures, wave modeling, surf zone hydrodynamics and coastal dynamics. Some of the specific paper topics include numerical modeling and experimental testing.

The journal’s contents cover civil engineering disciplines related to ocean, coastal and riverine waters as well as the interaction of these waters and the adjacent built and natural environments. Topics include dredging, floods, sediment transport, tides, wind waves and storm surge, tsunamis, climate change, rising sea level, extreme weather events and other hazards that affect shorelines, waterways, estuaries, and ports and harbors, as well as efforts to mitigate the impact of such hazards.

The focus of Javier’s research is on numerical modeling using CFD techniques of water wave mechanics, wave-structure interaction, wave generated turbulence, surf-zone hydrodynamics, wave interaction with aquatic ecosystems and probabilistic design of coastal structures. His main scientific contributions have been linked to CFD modeling in the coastal environment. As a result, IH2VOF and IHFOAM codes have been broadly distributed all along the scientific and technological coastal engineering community with more and 1000 users in 30 countries. He has also contributed to experimental analysis developing new non-intrusive optical experimental techniques.
