IHCantabria will develop tailor-made climate services for the forestry, insurance and offshore energy sectors in the WINDSURFER project

IHCantabria will cover the need to develop tailor-made climate services involving affected sectors to incorporate extreme wind and wave events into their information needs.

The strong winds and waves caused by extra-tropical cyclones produce substantial socio-economic impacts in sectors of society strongly conditioned by the climate, such as forestry, insurance and offshore energy.

Planning and mitigating these impacts requires in-depth knowledge of the severity, frequency and location of these storms and the associated extreme wind and wave generation mechanism. It is also essential to understand how these extreme events will change in the future so that the economic sectors mentioned can adapt to climate change.

Therefore, these sectors demand a variety of climate information to quantify the risk due to extreme wind and waves.

In order to meet this demand for information and mitigate the socio-economic impact of these extreme storms accompanied by strong winds and waves, two challenges will be addressed:

-       Advance in scientific aspects on the risks associated with extreme winds and waves:

  • characterization of the dynamics of extratropical cyclones
  • quantification of uncertainty in changes due to climate change
  • modelling of the impacts associated with these events.

-       Development of tailor-made climate services involving affected sectors and incorporating their information needs on extreme wind and wave events

The results of this project will allow a more reliable assessment of the risk associated with extreme winds that will assist in making decisions about plantation planning in the forest sector.

In the insurance sector, improved risk assessment will allow for improved risk pricing.

In the case of the marine energy sector, these developments will allow for safer infrastructure design and more efficient operation of facilities (oil platforms, wind farms).

In short, better adaptation to climate change and more resilient planning of these sectors. In the case of waves, developments will also have repercussions in other sectors such as maritime transport, fishing and the design of maritime infrastructures.

WINDSURFER has three objectives to address these scientific and technical challenges:

-       -         Develop new methods and tools to improve the characterization of extreme wind and wave events in the present climate and the changes expected in the future.

-       -         Develop new models to assess the impacts of extra-tropical storms and associated extreme winds and waves.

-       Provide localized climate information to assess the risk due to extreme wind and wave events in the present and future climate, with particular interest in the insurance, forestry and marine energy sectors.
