Coastal Disturbances

Coastal Disturbances

Anthropogenic disturbances in the coastal environment can jeopardize the health of coastal water bodies and estuaries. To avoid this  the different pressures must be identified and the magnitude of the impacts these can cause to the various elements of the system must be assessed. The discharge of urban and industrial wastewater, dredging and subsequent disposal of contaminated sediments, construction of dams, ports, maritime accidents, overfishing or installation of marine infrastructures such as wind farms or oil rigs are some of the alterations that can produce significant impacts on coastal ecosystems .

IH Cantabria has a multidisciplinary staff , as well as the necessary technical and material resources to identify and evaluate the effects of those pressures. In addition, all the knowledge is transferred to the competent authorities so that they can then use this information in the decision-making process, allowing an optimal use of the coast and generating the least possible damage to the environment.
